For years I have noticed these 'space invader' mosaics stuck onto walls all over Paris, and recently I learned that it is a street artist called the Invader who puts them up. This one on the rue des Martyrs is just a block away from my apartment.

7h30 am Friday, third day of a massive transport strike, everyone is getting their bikes out in the cold and dark morning and so were we - but we weren't going to work! Christophe, Joe and I took the day off and went mountain biking in the Compiegne Forest, 50 miles north of Paris. We nearly froze to death, it never got much above 32 degrees, but it was tons of fun afterwards we got steaks for lunch at a restaurant in Compiegne.

Today is Armistice Day in France. This is a photo of Louis de Cazenave, one of the last two French surviors of the First World War. He's 110 years old and lives in Brioude, a town in the Auvergne that I have cycled through. Today in Le Monde there was an article about M. de Cazenave and the other surviving 'poilu,' as France's WWI veterans are called, Lazare Ponticelli. Here's what it says:
"At 110, Louis de Cazenave and Lazare Ponticelli are too old to take orders from anyone. The time when they could be ordered by a whistle to go over the trench top is long gone. France's last two WWI vets just want to be left in peace. Neither one appreciated it when in 2005 the veterans' administration, led by the President Chirac, decided, without asking them, to plan a state funeral for the last veteran of World War I. The possibility of burying the last veteran in the Pantheon or next to the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe was discussed. But the two vets don't want anything to do with all that. They have their own plans. Louis de Cazenave wants to be buried with his family in the cemetary of Saint-George d'Aurac, where he was born on Oct. 16, 1897. He won't change his mind. He never liked medals and honors. "A load of rubish!" he says.
Having come back from the front a convinced pacifist, it was only after much insistance that he accepted the Legion of Honnor medal in the 1990s. "They can stick it!" he told his son. "Some of my pals didn't even get a wooden cross." He says his last wish is "to be left in peace."

"Eroici" is what the old guys who dress in vintage cycling clothes and ride vintage bikes in the Eroica race are called. It means Heros. These guys are two of the most well-known.

l'Eroica

Took us over 7 hours, but David and I completed our first Eroica. We got up at 4 am to be at the starting line by 5, but spent 3 hours talking to people, taking photos and soaking up the atmosphere, so didn't hit the road ourselves until 8:00. Half of the 80-mile-course was on gravel roads called "strade bianche"--David's bike computer registered the steepest climb at 18% on one of these. Going down was even worse, as the steepness + the twists in the road + the potholes and bumps + the gravel made it extremely hard to control the bike. I crashed once, and David got two flat tires because of this. Overall it was the best day of biking, and one of the best trips, that I've ever had. I will think of this race every time I have a glass of Chianti.

Lafarge, a big French cement company, invited journalists to Lyon to see its new concrete R&D center. These guys are demonstrating Extensia, a concrete that can be used to pour slabs of 400 square meters without joints, compared to only 25 square meters for ordinary concrete. That's supposed to make the job easier and faster, and reduce cracking in the concrete. The floor of the R&D center was made with Extensia concrete.

The Rugby World Cup started Sept. 7 in Paris. I watched this game on TV in October, 1999 and have not forgotten it. Let's hope France can do it again!

Ready for l'Eroica

L'Eroica is a bike race in Tuscany that my friend David and I are entered in next month. We will ride 135 km (80 miles) in the hilly wine region of Chianti. Half of this distance will be over gravel roads. The hills have up to a 16% grade -- steep. I just got my bike all tuned up and ready to go-- put on a set of cyclocross tires with Kevlar linings, that should help me avoid flats. The Lemond looks tough with the cyclocross tires on, don't you think?

I was in London four days and saw eight bands, including The People's Revolutionary Choir.
I also went to a small club in Brixton called the Windmill, where one of the bands playing was called the Honeytrap. Someone filmed it.

This is the pub near Oxford Street where I had a drink -- Kenny recommended it. There's a great old jukebox inside with 45s, not CDs, with good stuff like New Order, Stone Roses, James Brown, and this song by the Sex Pistols. Bradley's is tiny, so people drink their pints on the street.

One day after work, I walked from the Old Street tube station through The City, past Saint Paul's cathedral, across the Millennium Bridge and along the south bank of the Thames all the way to Westminster Bridge. I walked across and passed by the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, then continued up Whitehall Lane past No. 10 Downing Street and Trafalgar Square, then up Charing Cross Road all the way to Oxford Street, where I had a drink in a pub.
